On June 4th 1989, the first parliamentary elections in which representatives of the democratic opposition under the “Solidarity” label were allowed to run were organised in Poland.
The Solidarity opposition movement scored an unquestionable victory, winning all the seats available to them in both chambers of the Polish Parliament.
It was a landmark vote that marked the collapse of communism in the country after decades of totalitarian rule and triggered a domino effect across the region, culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of decades of division between Western Europe and the communist East.
We encourage you to watch a few-minute film showing the changeovers in the European countries that led to the fall of communism and paved the way for a peaceful transition to democracy in the region.
